Karolien works as a Tax & Legal Services Manager at the VAT Centre of Expertise at the Antwerp office. She provides advice on a wide range of topics: "Everything from an application for a VAT number for a foreign company or recommendations about new goods streams down to everyday practical queries about invoices or VAT returns. We are one element of the total solution offered by Moore Stephens. Accountancy clients for example will come to us for guidance on the most practical arrangements to achieve compliance with the VAT legislation."
As a newcomer you are allocated a mentor, and you get to know a whole lot of people during the annual residential seminar.
The variety, providing advice to all kinds of businesses, large and small, is what makes Karolien's job so interesting. And you don't have to meet these challenges all on your own. Karolien made a conscious decision to find a job working for someone other than the "Big Four", looking to find that "family feeling" by working intimately with a smaller group of colleagues. "And that's what I have found here. There's a big smile on my face every day when I set off for work."
The legislation Karolien works with is constantly being amended, and dealing with that calls for creativity and innovation. "Innovation means dealing with new rules and regulations and harmonising them with our existing structures. We're talking about creativity in the legal field."
But the same skills come into play when proactively seeking solutions for clients. "Also I am encouraged to question anything and everything: so I feel free to speak out if I think an idea isn't going to work."
