Alsan is a wholesaler in bathroom and heating fittings. Its central warehouse is the cog in the wheel that supplies its 11 distributors spread throughout Flanders. This naturally means it is crucial that the warehouse is fitted out as efficiently as possible – a strategic challenge that Moore Stephens Strategy & Operations was born to tackle.
Expertise offered by Moore Stephens:
- Warehouse layout and optimisation
- Process organisation and efficiency
- Project management
What the client wanted
Every Alsan distributor relies on the deliveries it receives from the central warehouse, and in order to optimise this process Alsan engaged Moore Stephens Strategy & Operations. In concrete terms they wanted the warehouse to be fitted out more efficiently and readied for a growth in both the range on offer and the number of outlets.
Our first step was to create a theoretical master plan for the warehouse operations. We presented specific proposals for improvements in the following areas:
- Location-based distribution
- Layout proposal
- Opportunities for expansion
- The introduction of location management
- A reception process
- Stock management
The next, concrete, phase saw us offer support during the transition to this new layout and approach to the work.
Within the space of a single week the Alsan warehouse was completely reorganised according to an ABC classification that used location codes. The result is that order picking has accelerated dramatically, and because the locations are labelled the newly trained warehouse staff can find everything they need in no time at all.
